Results support the use of music therapy with an emphasis on emotional-approach coping to improve positive affective states in adults awaiting elective cardiac catheterization and electrophysiological study. Statistically significant improvements in positive affect were seen after a single session of music therapy lasting 30-minutes in length. Conversely, participants who received a talk-based emphasis on emotional-approach coping or standard care did not demonstrate improvements in positive affect. Standley, J.M., & Hanser, S.B. (1995). Music therapy research and applications in pediatric oncology treatment. Journal of Pediatric Oncology Nursing, 12(1), 3-8. Her works from the 1950s demonstrate an explorative period with a visual language of largely amorphous shapes tending towards pure abstraction. By the following decade, Dodd had located an instinctive vernacular in fertile transcriptions of branches and skies, and hazy views of buildings. In a longstanding series of windows for which she has garnered much attention, Dodd’s works range from Hitchcockian voyeurism to meditations on opacity and the curiosity in dilapidation. Dodd’s observational painting over the years has become an ode to nature in its short-term flux and long-term rhythms, whether it is witnessed directly or through panes of glass. Consistent throughout her work, however, is the affirmation that she is not striving for illusion, but instead that her images are constructed of paint.

Yet, less is known about the role that empathy plays in musical preferences. 3 This is particularly surprising considering that emotional recognition, interpretation, and feeling are so central to music listening. And just as musical preferences appear to be, in part, manifestations of personality traits and values, it is reasonable to expect that given the emotionally communicative nature of music, people’s preferences may be driven by their empathy levels. These varying levels of empathy are likely to impact the types of music that people choose to listen to, not only in the long-term, but also in the short-term, depending on temporary fluctuations in empathy. The history of African American engagement with modernism also includes internal arguments and complications. By the 1960s and ’70s, an older generation of artists who found much to admire in abstraction — including the freedom to say just as much or as little as they wanted about the so-called real world — were being confronted by more politically active younger artists. Artists who favored muted colors, or grid-like forms, or allover fields of pattern and color, didn’t seem sufficiently engaged with what was happening on the streets. Groups like the Black Arts Movement were looking for new forms and new ideas that weren’t constrained by the aesthetic dictates of the still white-dominated fine arts world.
Industrialists such as Andrew Carnegie and John D Rockefeller contributed their enormous wealth, to art and other cultural institutions. You too can be a patron of the arts! However, it is not necessary to commission famous artists. You need not invest thousands. You don’t have to be a millionaire. Invest in wrought iron wall décor. Today, this is as pleasurable and as appealing as the expensive works of art obtained at posh galleries. It is therefore much more accessible and can be indulged in economically to express any style, or taste within that style and any theme relative to your interior design preferences. In a word, this décor is cost effective – an incredible bang for your buck. Conceivably, your entire home can be decorated tastefully at a price far below that of a single piece of a gallery purchase. Lesiuk, T. (2015). Buildings are part of the built environment. Burr: The irregular ridge of metal or plastic throw up on either side or a scratched incision. Calligraphic Line: Any controlled, flowing, continuous use of line in painting, drawing, and sculpture; the character and quality of an artist’s linear work. Carding: The process of aligning wood fibres to create a batt, accomplished with hand cards or on a carding machine. Although Jackson Pollock’s black paintings are sometimes referred to as ‘black and white’, works by other painters such as Kooning, Motherwell, and Kline better fit the ‘black and white’ tag. The primary colour in Pollock’s paintings is black. Hecker, P. (2012). Turkish Metal: Music, Meaning, and Morality in a Muslim Society. London; New York: Routledge. Landau, Ellen G. Did the music-making experience make the testing situation more enjoyable for the people in this study? Perhaps. What this study does show is that music can help to reveal cognitive and creative abilities that lie hidden beneath the cloud of a dementia-related illness. Nicola’s main method of recording the landscape is with a digital camera. She will take around 200 photographs on a walk of about 3 hours. ‘As I’m walking, I’m looking out for the way the light changes as the wind skiffs clouds overhead. The colours are constantly changing as light hits a particular area of sand or the way the sky is reflected in the water. Ideally, I gather material just after the tide has gone out and there is a layer of water that reflects the sky and this can be manipulated to create a sense of space. Other times, I’ll be driving and will have to fling the car into a passing place because a certain cloud has caught my eye. When I began painting the Hebrides, I wanted to communicate cultural and family associations within the work. Now it’s more about the landscape itself’. Fredenburg, H.A., & Silverman, M.J. (2014). In musical parlance, beat has many definitions. If you ask, What’s the beat of this song?†you’re asking about the tempo, a.k.a. Beats Per Minute (BPM). If you say, I love this beat,†you’re usually referring to a rhythm of around 2 to 4 bars long which generally includes 8-16 eighth, quarter, or (rarely) half notes. If you say, I love Beat It,†you’re referring to a popular Michael Jackson song. See? It’s complicated. Musicology , the academic study of the subject of music, is studied in universities and music conservatories. The earliest definitions from the 19th century defined three sub-disciplines of musicology: systematic musicology , historical musicology , and comparative musicology or ethnomusicology In 2010-era scholarship, one is more likely to encounter a division of the discipline into music theory , music history , and ethnomusicology Research in musicology has often been enriched by cross-disciplinary work, for example in the field of psychoacoustics The study of music of non-Western cultures, and the cultural study of music, is called ethnomusicology. Students can pursue the undergraduate study of musicology, ethnomusicology, music history , and music theory through several different types of degrees, including bachelor’s degrees, master’s degrees and PhD degrees.
