During each baseline (A), subjects were observed while completing a previously learned group music task without therapist facilitation. During the first intervention (B), the music therapist taught the social skills song to the subjects and facilitated role-play of the specific social initiation behaviors targeted in the song (e.g., eye contact, physical touch to gain attention, etc.). During the second intervention (C), subjects engaged in singing the social skills song with the music therapist, then completed the previously learned group music task with therapist facilitation to practice social initiation behaviors. Data was collected during baseline phases only via event recording on an author-created data sheet. The 19th century also witnessed a number of philosophical developments which would have a significant effect on art. The growth of political thought, for instance, led Courbet and others to promote a socially conscious form of Realist painting – see also Realism to Impressionism ). Also, the publication of The Interpretation of Dreams (1899) by Sigmund Freud, popularized the notion of the “subconscious mind”, causing artists to explore Symbolism and later Surrealism. The new self-consciousness which Freud promoted, led to (or at least coincided with) the emergence of German Expressionism , as artists turned to expressing their subjective feelings and experiences. Smith also leaves a legacy as an influential educator, who taught at the original Vancouver School of Art and later at the University of British Columbia, and as an arts philanthropist. Ken James, who co-founded the Artists for Kids Foundation with Smith in 1989 as a way to encourage well known Canadian artists to donate prints for arts education, remembers him as the most generous person I have ever met”. Review, 15 September 1987: 16. The field of Music Therapy Assisted Childbirth has been growing and developing during the last twenty years. A landmark study by Clark, McCorkle, and Williams (1981) was the first published treatment protocol for music therapists for working with labor and delivery patients. Their investigation was a preliminary study of the effectiveness of music for pain relief during labor and delivery. They found that music serves several functions in the natural childbirth process including attention focusing, distraction from pain, stimulating pleasure responses, focusing breathing, and as a conditioned stimulus for relaxation.
Participants were tested under various listening conditions: quiet, music that they’d said they liked, music that they’d said they didn’t like, a voice repeating the number three, and a voice reciting random single-digit numbers. The study found that participants performed worst while listening to music, regardless of whether they liked that music, and to the speech of random numbers. They did the best in the quiet and while listening to the repeated three.” Music may impair cognitive abilities in these scenarios because if you’re trying to memorize things in order, you may get thrown off by the changing words and notes in your chosen song, the authors speculate. Although other studies have found benefits to listening to music before performing a task, the authors note that this new research presents a more realistic scenario: hearing music at the same time as doing the expected task. You do not have to memorize these in order to talk about a painting with people, but they may help you understand a little better the paintings that you see. When you look down the list you will probably find that you already know many of the types of paintings. But a few may be new to you. Rose is in her eighties and lives in a nursing home due to her diagnosis of Probable SDAT – Senile Dementia of the Alzheimer Type. She speaks in one-word syllables, appears unaware of her surroundings and cannot take care of her bodily needs. However, when she is visited by the music therapist and sings “You are my Sunshine,” her words are clearly understood. Her singing has recognizable pitch and melody, and she sings with emotional expression. Her face brightens, and she makes eye contact with the therapist. Rose also enjoys participating in group music therapy. The members of her drum circle group have learned how to start and stop together, to change their playing from loud to soft and to play a variety of rhythmic patterns. They stay seated and pay attention to the therapist’s directions for the entire thirty-minute session. The nursing staff on the unit has noticed that for several hours following the group, those who have participated seem to have a better mood, are less agitated and more relaxed.

Spinal fusion (SF) for adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) is one of the most painful surgeries performed on adolescents. Music Therapy is an intervention shown to decrease postoperative pain intensity in adult samples. Currently at our hospital, a Music Therapist (MT) visits AIS patients on postoperative day 2 when the adolescent gets out of bed to a chair for the first time. As in many hospitals, resources are limited and the therapist can only provide one session per patient. We wanted to know if using other methods for delivering music (e.g., IPod, IPad, website) in addition to the usual individualized music therapy session would be desirable. Our first step was to ask adolescents’ their opinion. Hi Jayjay, I really got into the research aspect of this hub. This painting by French artist Jacques Louis David, could be considered the first truly political artwork. It depicts the aftermath of revolutionary leader Jean-Paul Marat’s murder, who was stabbed in his bathtub. David took a poignant political moment and painted it with near-photographic simplicity; his painting of his dead friend went on to become a pertinent piece of political propaganda, seeing it turned into an engraving which was widely circulated among the public. If you missed the huge Hockney exhibition back in 2017, this is a great opportunity to see some of his lesser-seen works. It features around 150 different drawings the artist made of himself, his muses, friends and family, drawn from both private collections around the world and his own personal stash. Arts-Based Environmental Education brings art education and environmental education together in one undertaking. The approach has two essential characteristics. The first is that it refers to a specific kind of environmental education that starts off from an artistic approach. Different from other types of outdoor or environmental education which offer room for aesthetic experiences, AEE turns the tables in a fundamental way. Art is not an added quality, the icing on the cake; it is rather the point of departure in the effort to find ways in which people can connect to their environment. A second fundamental characteristic is that AEE is one of the first contemporary approaches of bringing together artistic practice and environmental education in which practitioners also made an attempt to formulate an epistemology.
