Three reflective spheres hover above the courtyard of Florence’s Palazzo Strozzi in Tomás Saraceno’s immersive installation.  The metallic orbs mirror the historic Renaissance architecture in addition to visitors who pass by, while marking the entrance to the imagined space that explores life beyond anthropocentrism. As its name suggests, Aria is concerned with air, encompassing human travel, its ability to foster growth, and how it’s entwined with every living organism.

The Argentinian artist (previously) is known for his large-scale works that fall at the intersection of science and art and consider the human toll on the natural world. Throughout Aria are various experiences dealing with contemporary environmental issues: Glass forms hang from the ceiling and house Tillandsia plants, which need only air to survive, while “A Thermodynamic Imaginary” considers … Read the rest

Galerie Blue Square is dedicated to celebrating the talents of artists inspired by the principles and philosophies of the Russian avant-garde. Schwartz described Nixon as prolific in his output, and as being very ‘straightforward’ in his making, always finding the powerful and transformative mark. While his first exhibition was held at the legendary Melbourne avant-garde gallery Pinacotheca in 1973, he went on to mount hundreds of works -many multi panel – a trend he embraced in 2016. The Arshile Gorky Foundation Exhibition History

American contemporary artist, Jasper Johns, Jr., was born on May 15, 1930, in Augusta, Georgia. Colour: Three distinct vertical bands of colour – warm red, neutral beige, cool blue. Shapes: Distinct, large, simplified, some slight modelling. Texture: Strong repeated diagonal movement of the marking tool. As the artists moved towards modern acrylic paints in the 1980s the range of available colours became much broader and brighter colours were introduced. Whereas men were the main artists at Papunya and women assisted within family groups to work on the men’s paintings, by the mid-1980s women began to make their own paintings. As part of this process, as women artists became well known they also opted for a wider range of colours. The Art Institute of Chicago, IL. Mickalene Thomas (b. 1971, Camden, NJ; lives and works in Brooklyn, NY) makes paintings, collages, photography, video, and installations that draw on art history and popular culture to create a contemporary vision of female sexuality, beauty, and power. Urry means plenty of different things – but above all else, it indicates an affinity for cartoon creatures and other anthropomorphic animals. Marion Drummond strives to capture the immediacy and vibrancy of the scene before her, whether that be a still life, a portrait or a landscape. Such is the connection with the subject of her work that she will often mix the paint directly on the canvas with her fingers; in this process, there is a literal transfer of human warmth and energy to the painted surface. Marion describes her paintings as dynamically capturing ‘the moment’ and portraying it with a passionate energy. She has a particular love of the Blane valley countryside with its diversity of wildlife, rivers, moorland and hills. Daily walks provide Marion with colour notes for paintings and the sheer enjoyment of seeing the constant changing of light and season of the Scottish countryside. She … Read the rest

Henri Laurens

Sara’s Parlour Face Painting is a contemporary face and body art company based in Birmingham. Elliott Jamal Robbins’ work intersects social construction and self-perception to produce violently fractured narratives. In his Walk Series, installed here in sequence, Robbins paints stereotyped images in motion, only to repeatedly obliterate them—suggesting impeded progress. Stuart Middleton’s drawings of cattle constitute pristine renderings of the sanitized violence of the livestock industry, confirming the image as a distancing mechanism. Drawn from photographs by the artist, taken at a county fair where the livestock was showcased, Middleton faithfully renders the animals’ musculature and adornments. Middleton’s practice on the whole examines the specific application of animal psychology to the livestock industry—an example of exploiting evolutionarily learned behavior to optimize production. In Nolan Simon’s work, the most circulated, and opposed, of visual content collide—the religious motif, pornography, and social media. The work on view refers simultaneously to religious gesture … Read the rest

7 Best Music Therapy Ideas

Georgia ‘Keeffe or Georgia Totto ‘Keeffe was an American painter, who revolutionized the concept of modern abstract art. Montello, L., & Coons, E. E. (1999). Effects of active versus passive group music therapy on preadolescents with emotional, learning, and behavioral disorders. Journal of Music Therapy, 35(1), 49-67. Imaging studies have also given us a fairly fine-grained picture of the brain’s responses to music. These results make the most sense when placed in the context of how the ear conveys sounds in general to the brain. Like other sensory systems, the one for hearing is arranged hierarchically, consisting of a string of neural processing stations from the ear to the highest level, the auditory cortex. The processing of sounds, such as musical tones, begins with the inner ear (cochlea), which sorts complex sounds produced by, say, a violin, into their constituent elementary frequencies. The cochlea then transmits this information along separately … Read the rest
