Str8buttah founder Teck-Zilla shares new song ‘Victory’

Hip Hop has enjoyed a great year in Nigeria thus far with many rappers and producers releasing great works –whether song, EP or album.

The veteran producer Teck-Zilla has been on a solid run too. The Str8buttah convener in 2019 collaborated extensively with iLLBliss (IllyZilla) while engaged in some personal projects. This year, he’s stretched his reach even further, working with young cats like Vader The Wildcard and Samvsthekids.

His latest song, “Victory,” is an international effort which pools top lyrical talent from Nigeria (Phlow), United States of America (Shhabbaam Sahdeeq and Phoenyx) and Canada (Eternia).

Budding Afro pop musician Crayon

Recently Notjustok interviewed Afro Pop artist Crayon over a phone call, a cold Lagos day. What follows is a compression of that conversation.

2019. Barely a week after the release of his debut project Cray Cray, Crayon was performing in Port Harcourt and the reception to his songs awed the youngster. “People were going crazy for ‘So Fine’ and ‘Gock am’,” Crayon recalls excitedly in a WhatsApp voice note. “I was over the moon and the energy was so infectious. It was spiritual and I loved it.”

The music of Crayon is very communal. It’s the sound of people roaring an upbeat chorus or moving to the similarly paced beat. When the artist in 2019 signed to Don Jazzy’s record imprint which has housed Afro Pop icons like Tiwa Savage and Dr. Sid, it sparked celebration within the Lagos … Read the rest

A popular American ‘Pop Artist’ Roy Fox Lichtenstein or Roy Lichtenstein (October 27, 1923 – September 29, 1997) was born in New York City in an upper middle class family. Both sides of this conflict had their artists and poets, and this first painting (above), by Fritz Fuhrken was painted by a young German soldier who was captured in France towards the end of the war, and subsequently held in a Prisoner of War camp in Yorkshire, England. The painting is very simple, yet it readily conveys the horror of a tank under grenade attack during the Battle of Amiens. Fuhrken has used a wash of red paint as his background, and this helps the painting to convey a sense of danger, destruction and bloodshed. In the not-so-recent past, when someone wanted to buy art, they had to walk into a gallery in a major city. Although Hans Hofmann never joined the American Abstract Artists, he encouraged its membership and sent a letter of support when the organization was formally established. Yet, through his students, who represented not only a significant number of the membership, but an important counterbalance to the geometric formalists, Hofmann’s influence within the group was remarkable. Sunder points out that the art market is no longer about the gallery, but also includes publications, funding and residencies—a market for not getting paid”—and that she is present in some form within this”. Superflat is the Japanese postmodern art movement. A key feature of the art scene in the 21st century (and of many sectors of 21st-century life) is the impact of globalization – the accelerating interconnectivity of human activity and information across time and space. Aided by the internet and mass media, awareness of the vitality of contemporary art in localities around the globe has grown exponentially. Anyone with access to the internet can follow developments in Shanghai, Sydney, São Paulo, or Nairobi. Simultaneously the increased movement of artists across borders and oceans has added to the intermixing of influences and artistic vocabularies. For example, Wangechi Mutu , originally from Kenya, pursued further education in South Wales and then in the United States. Her collaged images of women are informed by African tribal arts, 20th-century European and American collage artists, and the latest illustrations from fashion, pornography, and medical sources.
