The large vocal ensemble most familiar to Westerners is the chorus, twenty or more singers grouped in soprano, alto, tenor, and bass sections. The designation choir is sometimes used for choruses that sing religious music. There is also literature for choruses comprised of men only, women only, and children. Small vocal ensembles, in which there are one to three singers per part, include the chamber chorus and barber shop quartet. Vocal ensemble music is sometimes intended to be performed a cappella, that is, by voices alone, and sometimes with instruments. Choral numbers are commonly included in operas, oratorios, and musicals. Nicola’s work is mainly landscape based and is inspired by the beaches and dramatic scenery of the West Coast of Scotland. She grew up in Inverurie, Aberdeenshire and visited the Outer Hebrides several times a year to visit family. The majority of her paintings are based on scenes in the Hebrides. As she says; ‘Anyone who has ever stood on a Hebridean beach will recognise the emotions that my work tries to invoke. From the vast expanse of sea and sky to the subtle colour and movement changes that come with the turning tide’. Tyler, H.M. (2002). The stimulus tape consisted of six excerpts; two selections in each of three categories. The three style categories were tonal western art music, atonal western art music, and classical jazz music. The two songs in each of the three categories were chosen to represent opposite moods. The label that each selection received was determined by the composer’s intended emotional content. The term “brisk but light,” and titles A Musical Joke and Sing, Sing, Sing were indications of uplifting or happy composer intentions. The term “sehr langsam” translated as very slow or sluggish, title Overture to Goethe’s Tragedy, and the piece Goodbye Pork Pie Hat written as an elegy for the great saxophonist Lester Young were indications of morose or sad composer intentions.
