Impressionism was called “The New Painting” and just what did the nineteenth-century artistic world mean by that? This build-up of exhibitions has shed a light on an important aspect of the modernist embrace of spirituality, a phenomenon that has to be views in a wider context. Lines and shapes are all well and good, but they beg to be filled in with color, so a piece of geometrical art by the quintessential geometrical artist, Piet Mondrian, plays with the notion that lines are actually outlines, and the color finds its way onto the painting in a very restrained manner. Indeed, restraint may be the keyword for geometrical painting, because the precision required necessitates a slower manner with more planning than abstract expressionism, which may be considered the absolute opposite of geometrical art. Measured compositions, akin to music in its regimentation, make for a piece of art that appeals to our cooler, more calculating brains than expressionism. After debuting at the Grey Art Gallery at New York University, Taking Shape will travel to the Mary and Leigh Block Museum of Art, Northwestern University, where it will be on view from April 28 through July 26, 2020, and then to the Herbert F. Johnson Museum at Cornell University from August 22 through December 13, 2020. In 2021 the exhibition will travel to the McMullen Museum of Art at Boston College, where it will be displayed from January 25 through June 6, and will shortly thereafter be on view at the University of Michigan Museum of Art from June 25 through September 19, 2021. An octave is the distance between two tones, one of which has a hertz number that is double the frequency of the other. For example, if we take 440 Hz and double the frequency, we get a tone with a hertz number of 880. This 2:1 ratio defines the octave. The second tone, which is the octave of the first tone, is created by faster vibrations and generates a higher pitch than the one vibrating at 440 cycles per second. In fact, when they are played at the same time, they blend together, which can make it difficult for an untrained musician to recognize them as two distinct tones rather than the same pitch, despite the fact that one is vibrating twice as fast. The foster care system’s first step in caring for the child is to take care of physical health problems such as malnourishment or injury. After that, they will evaluate the child’s mental health. The most common disorders that are found in foster care are behavioral disorders. There is speculation that the high rate of diagnoses is because the test is given to the caregivers, who can be biased. Others speculate that the high number comes from misinformation given in order to receive medicaid. Since all children who are sexually abused and enter into foster care automatically qualify for medicaid, the speculation seams plausible (Chernoff, 1994). Another common disorder found in foster children is attachment disorders. Asperger’s syndrome is popularly described as a disorder on the autism spectrum manifested most often by difficulty sustaining typical social interactions, particularly with peers. The subject of this case study was a 15-year-old male with Asperger’s in a mainstreamed high school setting. In a previous study the subject was given an MP3 player and told that he could keep it if he completed some tasks. The subject asked 5 boys and 5 girls, of his choosing, to tell him what their favorite song was and why they liked it. Then he was given a gift card and instructed to find the various pieces of music on-line and download them to the MP3 player. He listened to the music and wrote a paragraph about each piece explaining why his peers said they liked those tunes and what things about the music or lyrics he thought caused them to like it. When asked about whether or not he was aware of this music before the project and how he liked the music the subject indicated that this was not the type of music he listened to but that he had enjoyed coming to know some of these songs and would continue to listen to some of them. He also stated that he felt that he was “friends” with some of the peers with whom he had interacted during the project.
