Instrument-specific neuroplasticity interestingly extends to perception. Musicians show greater evoked potentials in the presence of auditory stimuli as compared to nonmusicians (Pantev et al., 1998). This effect is modulated by the specific musical training, as indicated by timbre-specific neuronal responses observable in different groups of instrumentalists. For example, string and trumpet players reveal stronger evoked cortical responses when presented to the sound of their respective instrument (Pantev, … Read the rest

His condition can be seen as a decisive factor in triggering the artist’s desire to create a new artistic language. His senses intertwined and became one, transforming sounds into shapes and colours. Kandinsky’s use of colour is much more than a question of aesthetics; it was inherent to the way he perceived the world. In this abstract painting, each colour has been carefully chosen and is filled with symbolic meaning. In his abstract two-dimensional painting, Kandinsky succeeds in ensuring that the spectator can feel … Read the rest

Consistent with hemispheric lateralization, there is evidence to suggest that the left and right hemispheres of the brain are responsible for different components of musical memory. By studying the learning curves of patients who have had damage to either their left or right medial temporal lobes, Wilson & Saling (2008) found hemispheric differences in the contributions of the left and right medial temporal lobes in melodic memory. Kandinsky, for one, produced controlled explosions of color that bear a striking resemblance to images that appear in Thought-Forms, a standard theosophical text. Mondrian’s geometric compositions were meant to express the dynamic equilibrium” of the immaterial realm. And, of course, the Surrealists were entranced by automatic drawing as a way to connect with the unconscious.
