In May 1915, Frederick received a telegram notifying him that his brother, James, a purser on the Lusitania, was lost at sea with the sinking of his ship on 7 May. McCubbin, received a telegram on the same day, that informed him that his son, Hugh, was wounded at Gallipoli. These two items of bad news affected McCubbin greatly, and he suffered what he referred to as ‘A bit of a breakdown’. He produced few large works after this time, and lost much of his inspiration for painting. While the 1967 film of the same name was a critical flop, the album was a huge success. The commonly known (and released on CD) version is the American release, which featured the 6 songs in the film along with 5 singles released by the band in that same year.
After taking loads of pictures of the square, I walked directly up the stairs of the National Chiang KaRHi Shek Memorial Hall. I saw an image of this painting on one of my school books when I was a child. I remember that I was amazed by the realism of the fruits and the leaves and I could not believe that it was a painting and not a photograph. The students would stay together in the summer months in Heidelberg, to paint. Based on European art fundamentals, these Plein Air paintings portrayed the colorful Australian landscapes. Right from domestic themes to urban arrangements, the Heidelberg artists painted all. The students were very heavily devoted towards Landscape Art. They were interested in producing Contemporary Impressionism to more accurately demonstrate the Australian environment than that done in the previous works through the Australian history. The artists were intrigued with the spontaneous lighting effects, resulting in their experimentation with different brushstroke styles and techniques.
