Inspired by the radical innovations of late 19th-century painters and sculptors, 20th-century modernists pushed art to new frontiers of expression and abstraction, rewriting the rules about what constituted art and how its materials could be used. Contemporary Art is the art of today, produced by artists who are living in the twenty-first century. Contemporary art provides an opportunity to reflect on contemporary society and the issues relevant to ourselves, and the world around us. Contemporary artists work in a globally influenced, culturally diverse, and technologically advancing world. Their art is a dynamic combination of materials, methods, concepts, and subjects that challenge traditional boundaries and defy easy definition. Diverse and eclectic, contemporary art as a whole is distinguished by the very lack of a uniform, organizing principle , ideology, or ‘ism.’ Contemporary art is part of a cultural dialogue that concerns larger contextual frameworks such as personal and cultural identity, family, … Read the rest

American contemporary artist, Jasper Johns, Jr., was born on May 15, 1930, in Augusta, Georgia. Five years later, combining a daring design with the richest materials the Empire could offer, the third – and final – Hagia Sophia was dedicated by Justinian at Christmas in 537. It is said that he uttered “Solomon, I have surpassed you” at the opening of the new church. Indeed, Hagia Sophia was a latter-day Temple of God. Its full name in Greek was Ναός της Αγίας του Θεού Σοφίας, Naos tēs Hagias tou Theou Sophias, which means “Shrine of the Holy Wisdom of God” (thank you Wikipedia). In the form Justinian gave it Hagia Sophia was much larger, more beautiful and daring than the Temple in Jerusalem, even the second marble temple built by Herod. Was he relieved to see the project done, was he satisfied with the results? What he said at the … Read the rest

Impressionism was called “The New Painting” and just what did the nineteenth-century artistic world mean by that? The painting includes a river (the St. Lawrence), a dock with a building, horses, people, a ferry crossing the river coming to the dock, a headland with boats and buildings in the distance. Large wet snowflakes fall from the overcast sky. Smoke spirals from the ferry. The picture is an impression rather than a realistic representation of a scene. Goodrich, John. Figurative art, alternatively known as figurativism, is a style in art forms -predominantly in paintings and sculptures. Normally during the school year I travel to various Region 14 school campuses, visiting thousands of students through our Art-To-Go program. While on spring break this year, I received an unfortunate phone call saying that the schools were closing due to Covid-19 precautions, which meant that myself and the other Outreach Instructors would ultimately not see our local students, classrooms, and teachers again until the next school year. This was hugely disappointing as we love our monthly campus visits, as well as hosting each of those students at the museum in May for the final month of the program. But- just because Art-To-Go was placed on hold, doesn’t mean that our student outreach went on hiatus! The Education Department at the OJAC worked quickly to create outreach alternatives for these student audiences despite … Read the rest
