Very Artsy News: Airport Art, Slabs and more
We’re just days away from the new year, do you have your resolutions yet? Well, be sure to add “see more art” to your 2022 goals list. This week is a bit quiet, but we’ve rounded up a few things to look forward to. Here’s some end-of-the-year art news as we say farewell to 2021:
Houston Center for Contemporary Craft Awarded an Endowment
Little Rock-based Windgate Foundation has awarded the Houston Center for Contemporary Craft with a $3.5-million endowment fund. The generous fund is intended for HCCC’s operational costs, with an emphasis on the institution’s artist residency and curatorial fellowship programs.

City of Houston Opens Call for Airport Commission
The Mayor’s Office of Cultural Affairs and the Houston Airport’s System is looking for artist submissions from the Houston area, for those interested in having their work featured in the new Mickey Leland International Terminal at George Bush Intercontinental Airport. Six new boarding gates are under construction and will exhibit art to inspire travelers and complement the architecture. Submissions are due February 8.

Wild N’ Out is Coming to Houston
Actor and comedian Nick Cannon is bringing his comedy game show Wild ‘N Out Live to the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion for one night next summer, June 18, 2022. The live show will include special performances to be announced. Tickets are on sale now.

Music and Slab Culture at CAMH
Curious about how slab culture got its start in Houston? In conjunction with The Dirty South exhibit, CAMH has invited ethnomusicologist Langston Collin Wilkins and artist Big Love to discuss the origins and impact of slabs and Houston’s rich hip-hop legacy. The program is part of their Virtual Art at Noon series and will take place on Zoom from 12:00-1:00 PM on January 7.
